Solar eclipse Sunday visible from Oregon

Something strange is about to happen to the shadows beneath your feet.

On Sunday, May 20, the Moon will pass in front of the sun, transforming sunbeams across the Pacific side of Earth into fat crescents and thin rings of light.

It's an annular solar eclipse, in which the Moon will cover as much as 94 percent of the sun. Hundreds of millions of people will be able to witness the event. The eclipse zone stretches from southeast Asia across the Pacific Ocean to western parts of North America.

In the United States, the eclipse begins around 5:30 p.m. PDT. For the next two hours, a Moon-shaped portion of the sun will go into hiding. Greatest coverage occurs around 6:30 p.m. PDT. The partial eclipse ends just before 7:30 p.m. >>> Animated Map | Share Your Photos

Because some of the sun is always exposed during the eclipse, ambient daylight won't seem much different than usual.

Corvallis man breaks U.S. bowling record

CORVALLIS, Ore. - On any given Saturday morning, you'll find Bill Starnes tinkering with his game at Highland Bowl in Corvallis.

"I bowl 4 or 5 days a week," Starnes said.

The 69 year-old has been bowling ever since he could pick up a bowling ball at his father's bowling center.

"I've been bowling a lot of years, I've thrown a lot of bowling balls," Starnes said.

But when Starnes bowled an 814 series at the Northwest Senior Tour tournament, that landed the veteran bowler a spot in the U.S. Record books.

This makes Starnes the only bowler in the United States to score an 800 series in six consecutive decades.

"It's really quite humbling because there have been many great bowlers who for whatever reason were not able to do that," Starnes said.

This is not the first time the bowler of 52 years has been recognized for his bowling abilities.

Starnes was a star bowler at the University of Oregon in the 1960s.

He was even given the chance to go professional, but turned that opportunity down.
